HIMSS AI Outcomes Framework: why consistent measurement matters
HIMSS has launched a multi-institutional effort to create the AI Outcomes Framework, a standardized approach to measure the impact, value and return on investment of AI tools in healthcare. The initiative addresses a persistent barrier to clinical AI adoption: the lack of consistent, evidence-based metrics that link algorithm performance to clinical, operational and financial outcomes.
Establishing a new standard for AI value
The framework is designed to move evaluation beyond isolated accuracy metrics and toward outcomes that matter to providers, payers and patients. It defines measurement domains, recommended study designs, and reporting expectations so hospitals and vendors can produce comparable, reproducible evidence. That evidence supports procurement decisions, regulatory review and clinician trust by clarifying where AI delivers measurable benefit or risk.
APAC’s leadership in action
Five founding health systems from the Asia-Pacific region are providing domain expertise and real-world validation: Asan Medical Center and Seoul National University Hospital in South Korea; Taichung Veterans General Hospital in Taiwan; and National University Hospital and SingHealth in Singapore. These partners will contribute clinical workflows, outcomes data and implementation lessons so the framework reflects diverse care settings across the region.
Key milestones and collaborative benefits
The partners signed a memorandum of understanding recently, with a formal launch planned for 2027 and a public framework publication expected in 2028. Participating organizations will receive tailored measurement modules, support for multi-site validation, and opportunities for co-authorship on peer-reviewed studies. HIMSS will steward governance and dissemination, helping scale the framework globally.
By producing consistent, transparent evidence, the HIMSS AI Outcomes Framework aims to accelerate responsible AI adoption, improve investment decisions and build shared knowledge across health systems worldwide.
