AI Takes a Bite Out of Dental Diagnostics: BeCertain Secures Investment
Mindflair plc has signalled support for a funding round led by Sure Valley Ventures that raised A31.7 million in pre-seed capital for BeCertain, a clinical AI company focused on dental imaging. The funding will help move BeCertain’s software assistant for 2D intraoral X-rays from research to clinical deployment, with an emphasis on practical use in routine dental practice.
BeCertain’s Precision AI: X-Ray Interpretation Transformed
Interpretation of dental X-rays can vary between clinicians, contributing to missed findings or inconsistent follow-up. BeCertain addresses this with an uncertainty-aware machine learning system trained to identify common conditions such as caries, bone loss, periapical infections and restoration defects on intraoral radiographs.
The system produces calibrated confidence scores for each finding, highlighting cases where the model is less certain so clinicians can prioritise review or order additional imaging. This approach keeps the dentist in control, supports second-opinion workflows, and is designed with patient data protection in mind.
Clinical Impact and Future of Dental AI
Clinicians may see more consistent detection of subtle lesions and clearer triage of complex cases, which can improve patient management and clinic efficiency. BeCertain originated from research at King’s College London and received early support from the National Institute for Health and Care Research. That academic grounding guides validation and clinical acceptability as the company scales.
For investors and health technology teams, this round signals growing interest in AI tools that reduce diagnostic variability while preserving clinician oversight. For patients, the promise is more reliable screening and prompt identification of conditions that benefit from early treatment. As BeCertain moves toward wider clinical testing, its uncertainty-aware design offers a practical path for integrating AI into everyday dental care without replacing professional judgement.
